Kicks for Kids

Looking for something for your junior soccer player to do during the cold, dark, short winter days to keep them from going stir crazy? There are a variety of options available for instructional-oriented indoor soccer here in the Triangle. First of all Soccer Dome America has the longest running local programs which offer a variety of options for kids from 2 to 7 years before they move into the normal league ranks. This past Fall, the Carolina Sportsplex started their L'il Kickers program. L'il Kickers, a nationally developed program, is a non-competitive, introductory soccer and movement skills program for boys and girls ages 18 months - 9 years. The program aims not just to teach soccer to kids, but also aims to use soccer as a tool to teach kids about life. The newest Triangle-area kids soccer program, KinderKixx starts up at the Dream Sports Center in Apex January 30th. KinderKixx is a progressive soccer program designed to challenge and motivate children ages 3-6 years old. The program, which is headed up by Kirsten and Scott Schweitzer of First Touch Academy, emphasizes the development of motor skills and socialization. My four and two year olds have gotten a real kick out L'il Kickers. It's kind of like a cross between an outing to Little Gym and a game of soccer. I feel that Max is developing his balance, coordination, and ball touch much better in this program than he did in the small-sided soccer games he played with Dream Camps outdoor league this past fall. We haven't tried the other programs yet but hope to make our rounds over the next couple of sessions. I'll keep you posted on what we think of the other programs. UPDATE: Kirsten just let me know that KinderKixx will not start up until the Fall of 2006
