Cary Makes Way for Pro Soccer to Triangle

The rumour that the ownership group of the Rochester Rhinos is looking to put a USL team in Cary is building steam... Over in the N&O's Wake Politics blog, Toby Coleman is reporting that Town of Cary officials have recently cleared a major hurdle in the negotiations to bring a men's soccer team to the Triangle.

A deal to bring pro soccer back to SAS Soccer Park (the former home of the WUSA's Carolina Courage) has been delayed because the agreement that allows the Town of Cary to manage the park does not give it authority to lease it out to tenants.

Town leaders recently fixed the problem by getting authority from the state government, which owns the park, and Wake County, which officially leases the park from the state, to lease out SAS Soccer Park.

Town Parks Director Mary Henderson said she expects lease negotiations with the Rhinos management to start up soon.

(As reported here earlier, the Rhinos will be holding spring training in Cary this March/April.)

Good to hear. It would be nice to have a USL team here. I would certainly make it to a game or two a year, and most certainly would go for Open Cup games.
